When I first looked at this vest that I picked up at a World Swap Day event, I almost put it back on the rack because the tag on the vest was not my usual size. But I gave it a second look, tried it on and it fit perfectly! So that's just a lesson that you should swap (or purchase) what fits and not focus on the numerical size.

I can now say that my red pants are no longer considered neglected!

As promised, here is the second outfit featuring my neglected red pants. See the first here.
I'll go more casual on the third remix of the pants next week and figure out other colors to wear
with the pants other than black and white.

While I acknowledge that I still get mistaken for a teen on a regular basis, I do feel more mature when I wear lipstick. For years, I thought I would never wear lipstick, but it has quickly become

my favorite makeup item this winter.

I have taken to wearing bright colors more often lately, but black and white is still one of my favorite color combinations.

This top was purchased at the end of high school when I had to trek to a suburban mall to shop in H&M because they weren't as ubiquitous as they are now. The most unexpected pieces stand the test of time.

I bought this jacket on my way to an event to wear as a topper to a black dress before the holidays. Sorry, I didn't get a chance to take photos of that outfit. Animal prints never go out of style for me! This time around, I decided to go more casual and pair the jacket with jeans. I think next time, I'll wear it with a pencil skirt and pumps.

And don't be fooled by the lack of winter outerwear in these photos, I froze because it's cold outside!

I usually create a long list of resolutions early in the year that I forget about after a few weeks, so this year I decided to forgo the long list and focus on one resolution: I will focus on living in a state of positivity and gratitude in 2012. I like having a visual reminder of specific goals, so I will also create a vision board that I can look at daily. Do you write resolutions or do anything else to prepare for the new year?

Favorite Books of 2011

The end of the year is a good time to reflect on books I enjoyed reading during the year.

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan: I actually read this book earlier this month, but it is a definite favorite. In Defense of Food made me want to actually change the way I eat instead of just thinking about it as I had been doing. Since reading In Defense of Food, I've started reading food labels more carefully and now wonder about things like if I should add more Omega 3 fatty acids to my diet...

The Language of Baklava by Diana Abu-Jaber: If you love memoirs and beautifully described food, you will enjoy this book. I really enjoyed this book and the themes of family, fathers and daughters and living in-between two cultures.

Normal Gets Your Nowhere by Kelly Cutrone: PR fashion veteran Kelly Cutrone's "tell it like it is" tone and off-beat advice is good for young professionals from all fields. Cutrone encourages young people to throw out the concept of "normal" and go after your dreams.

Super Rich by Russell Simmons: I did a book review of Super Rich earlier this year and it was definitely a favorite of the year.

ReWork by: Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson: This innovative book discusses how breaking the rules can help you succeed in your entrepreneurial endeavors.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith: I somehow managed to let this classic get away from me until this year. I didn't expect to like it but really enjoyed the poignant story Betty Smith told of life in Brooklyn in the early 1900s.

A Return to Love: Reflections from the Principles of a Course in Miracles by Marianne Williamson: I enjoyed the inspirational messages that Williamson emphasized in this book. I was not familiar with the Course in Miracles until reading this book which broke down the key aspects of the course and discussed the author's personal experiences.

Generation Debt by Anya Kamenetz: This eye-opening book examines debt among young Americans, particularly student loan debt and the implications that this debt has on society and on the economy.

This dress was a favorite over the spring and summer and the good news is that it still is. The bad news is that I somehow managed to shrink it a little in the dryer so it's not as long as it once was...bummer.

I certainly don't have to worry about tripping over my dress as I once did. But it's okay, in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal.

Happy Monday! I'm still in awe that December has arrived and the year is quickly coming to a close. The older I get the faster time seems to go by! I definitely appreciate the relatively mild weather we've had in DC lately because I'm not quite ready for snow (and indoor outfit photos) yet.

Cobalt blue and fuchsia are such a fun colors to wear year-round. This coat is my favorite "in-between coat" than weightier than my trenches but not as heavy as my winter coats. Are you enjoying milder weather or has winter set in where you live?

Shen Dove: What inspired you to start your blog and how did you come up with the title?

Cortnie: Well I had originally started a styling and personal shopping business (StyleLust, LLC) in September 2009 and immediately knew that I should blog about the things I was doing. The blog was named StyleLust Pages because when you're online, the screen you're viewing is considered a page. So it was kind of like you were viewing the pages of StyleLust's diary. Only it didn't turn out to be a blog of what the business was doing, but more of the personal style blog it is today. Good question!

Shen Dove: How would you describe your personal style? Have you seen your style evolve since you started your blog?

Cortnie: I always say my personal style is casual chic. I love my heels, but I love ballet flats just as much. My favorite thing to wear is a slouchy sweater and skinny jeans which happens to look great with heels or flats.My style has definitely evolved since I started blogging just over 2 years ago. I wouldn't have put on a pair of corduroys then, but a lot of the things I was wearing I would wear again today. I'd maybe change a small thing or two about a couple of looks though. Nothing major.

Shen Dove: What inspired you to start your Etsy shop with your fab clutches?

Cortnie: Do you have a favorite?Omg. So I always wanted to learn how to sew and this summer I found myself with more time on my hands than usual. My grandmother can do pretty much anything so of course I had her teach me. I told her I had an interest in making bags and she was more than happy to show me how to make them. About two weeks after learning how to sew I had my Etsy shop up and running. It's been about three months since I first learned everything. A lot of people think I've been sewing for a while. So not the case.It's kind of hard to pick a favorite clutch. I love the 'Genevieve' because of the taupe and white print, the fabric is AMAZING on the 'Britnie' clutch and I like the 'Patsy' clutch because it has a real vintage vibe to it. I think the new sequin clutch is perfect for the holidays too.

Shen Dove: How has the city/town you live in influenced your style?

Cortnie: It's very laid back where I live. Fashion isn't a big thing. You would easily stand out by wearing 4-5 inch heels anywhere you went. I guess that's why I own a lot of flats.

Shen Dove: Do you have any personal style rules you live by? If so what are they?Rules?

Cortnie: There are no rules! Just be yourself. The more confident you are in what you're wearing, the better you look!

I was looking at website designs and colors for work research earlier this week and came across a few websites that combined orange and blue. This combo isn't new to me, I just felt re-inspired after my research. Anyway, I liked the colors together so much that I decided to pair the colors in an outfit. I'll definitely pair these cheerful colors again in the near future perhaps in an outfit or maybe accent pillows for my apartment. I've got plenty more orange and blue inspiration after doing a search of the colors on Pinterest. Think I'll start pinning some of this inspiration on my boards.

I'm sure other outfit bloggers have said this already, but as much as I love fall weather, taking pictures this time of year is really a challenge because it gets dark so early...oh well. Adjustments will be made but I don't see myself hitting the daily mark for outfit posts until the spring, but it's not the end of the world.

On another note, it has been kind of weird seeing so many holiday commercials and ads BEFORE Thanksgiving...guess stores want us to go out and spend to stimulate the economy pretty badly. I don't see myself doing much non-gift shopping between now and the end of the year, so I'll be sticking to older pieces of clothing from my closet like this blazer, scarf and skirt.

I'm super behind on comments and hope to catch in the next day or so.

I consider shorts a fall seasonal item. I rarely feel compelled to wear them in scorching weather, but as soon as the fall chill is in the air, I enjoy pairing them with my favorite tights. My "cage" ankle boots are another item that I prefer to wear in the fall. Tights (especially colored ones) add a bit more visual interest to them in my opinion. Having seasonal favorites means that you always have an item to look forward to wearing because you wear it for a limited time. What is non-fashion seasonal favorite I've been enjoying lately: Pumpkin spice lattes.

I don't think I've mentioned this when I've worn this skirt previously, but it is several years old and was once ankle length. The skirt also had a front slit and came with a huge safety pin fastened to the front (in my defense it purchased in the late 90's!). It has survived a few moves and several closet purges mainly because I got it hemmed. It's amazing how doing something as simple as cutting several inches off a skirt can give it a new look and a lot of 'remix' potential.

This month's Style Profile comes from KayCee of Two Stylish Kays. KayCee is a personal stylist and a thrift shopping guru that puts together great outfits. KayCee also covers great fashion events in Atlanta. Now let's get to the interview questions!

Shen Dove: What inspired you to start your blog and how did you come up with the title?

KayCee: I started my personal style blog to celebrate my love of fashion, thrift shopping and inspiring women to look stylish all the time. The name Two Stylish Kays describes the fun I have mixing trendy fashion with classic style and retail brands at resale prices.

Shen Dove: How would you describe your personal style? Have you seen your style evolve since you started your blog?

KayCee: My dominant style is classic. I enjoy having longstanding staples that I can wear year round and look effortless. But I do enjoy mixing in a few trendy pieces to give my outfit an unexpected element to make me stand out. Since doing my blog, I find that I'm willing to wear new styles and trends that I probably would not have tried in the past.

Shen Dove: What do you enjoy most about blogging about style and fashion?

KayCee: Overall blogging has offered me so many opportunities to meet like-minded women who are passionate about fashion. I love reading comments from my readers and I feel honored when they say that I have inspired them to try a new style.

Shen Dove: How has the city/town you live in influenced your style?

KayCee: I was born on the beautiful island of Trinidad, but grew up in New Orleans. In both cultures, women are very comfortable in their own skin and it's not taboo to be exposed or too sexy. Especially when wearing costumes in bold, vibrant colors during Carnival and Mardi Gras. So I love wearing clothes that enhance my body and express my mood.

Shen Dove: What make-up, nail polish or accessories are you excited about wearing this fall?

KayCee: I am very excited about wearing the infinity scarf, cherry red leather gloves and my camel colored cape.

Shen Dove: You are a fan of thrift shopping which I think is so great because its eco-friendly and you can usually make your money stretch further. Do you have any tips for readers that may not tried thrift shopping yet?

KayCee: (1) Look for bargains - Most clothes at thrift stores are used so take advantage of the low prices. But don’t simply buy items because of the price. Make sure that it is something that you love and can integrate into your wardrobe. (2) Stock up on accessories - One of my favorite finds when shopping in thrift stores is the costume jewelry section. The selection ranges from vintage to trendy. I also stock up on leather belts, clutch purses and scarfs. These are great items that are an easy way to update and transform an outfit. (3) Experiment with a new style or the season’s hottest trends - The huge selection of clothing available at thrift stores is a great way to try out a new style. It’s an inexpensive investment to determine if you would like a certain look. Plus there is no guilt from paying full price for items that may end up in your closet unloved. (4) Spend Time, Save Money - One of the most important things to remember about secondhand style is that it requires patience and thinking outside the box. Unlike department store shopping, where you are wowed rack after rack of clothing, a thrift stores is sometimes a hit or miss. But if you can spend the time, you will find so many new inexpensive additions for your wardrobe.

Shen Dove: What are some of your interests/hobbies outside of fashion blogging? Do you have any hidden talents?

KayCee: I am a personal stylist, own a formal dress rental company and co-host fashion swaps.

Shen Dove: I love that you have so many entrepreneurial endeavors! Do you have any personal style rules you live by? If so what are they?

KayCee: My mom introduced me secondhand stores at an early age, so I learned the joy of thrift shopping and how to create fashionable wardrobes on a modest budget. So my personal style motto is, "Personal style is a look that is all your own. It’s not about how much money you spend, but how you wear your clothes."

I'm rarely an early adopter of technology or fashion trends, so I'm still really feeling colored denim. Colored jeans are a fun way to add color to my fall weekend uniform of jeans and shirts. I also happen to think though other styles are great, skinny jeans are perfect for short ladies like me because they rarely need hemming, just cuff them a little and add heels!

Book Review: The Art of Choosing

I love a good novel as much as the next person, but I also really love reading books of the "pop-psychology" variety which is how I would describe this book. If you enjoyed reading books like The Tipping Point and Blink, then this book is for you. The Art of Choosing centers around the research of Sheena Iyengar on the subject of choice. The book delves into how different cultures (and Americans in particular) value choice and how decision making impacts many aspects of our lives. Reading this book made me realize that Western cultures view choice as a right, but this is not the case in other cultures around the world. Iyengar references her own life experiences in the book as well as specific studies that she spearheaded and how her research has shaped her views on choice. Iyengar also references pop culture and film sequences that would be familiar to many people which I found particularly interesting because Iyengar happens to be blind (you'll have to read the book to learn more about her personal story).

Western society has evolved into a cultural perspective where variety of choice is seen as a right and not just a way of life for some people. As a person who loves fashion and the options that come with being a consumer of goods like clothing, personal items (make up) and technology, I love having fashion choices and would be a sad Shen Dove if I had to wear the same thing every day. But I enjoyed reading this book because it pointed out the pros and cons of living in a society of plentiful choices and made me realize that sometimes a variety of choices doesn't always translate to better; in fact sometimes numerous choices can be overwhelming. I found this book to be well written and researched, so check it out if you are looking for a thought-provoking read this fall.

DIY: What Color Should I Dye My Skirt?

My shopping budget is tapped out at the moment, and it's just as well because I need to start saving my pennies for my 2012 travel budget anyway. Since I can't shop, I figured that it was time to take a look at my clothing and see if I could give any of my items a new lease on life. I decided that I love the shape and fit of the Forever21 skirt seen below, but I'm not in love with the color, so it's now a candidate for dying.

I was inspired by Megan Nielsen to try my first attempt at dying several months ago and it's pretty easy but I haven't made time to dye or overdye any other items. Here are a few swatches from RIT Dye website that I'm considering:

I was walking through my local drug store recently and decided to do something I've literally never done before, I bought a tube of lipstick. Cover Girl Queen Collection's Paint the Town Red to be specific. That's not a big deal for most, but I literally never wear lipstick. I could have five tubes of lip gloss in my purse at any given time, but no lipstick. I have the slight fear of looking like a kid playing in make-up. I'm still not sure if I'm feeling red lipstick enough to wear it regularly, but you've gotta shake things up make-up wise here and there right? I think next time, I'll go for a less bright color in the plum family though. Now to conquer my fear of incorrectly applying smoky eye make-up...

Fall Reading List

For me, the change in seasons means another seasonal book list since I love setting goals and making lists. Here are four books I plan to read this fall:

Fashion 2.0.: Blogging Your Way to the Front Row - The Insider's Guide to Turning Your Fashion Blog into a Profitable Business and Launching a New Career, Vol. 1 by Yuli Ziv. After reading about this author over at Stylish Thought, I decided to add this book to my reading list. Business, blogging and fashion are three interests I've had for a while, so I thought it would be interesting to read Yuli's advice.

One Day It Will All Make Sense by Common. I've been a fan of Common's music since the 90's when he went by the Common Sense moniker. Since I also enjoy reading memoirs, I decided to add this book to my list. Common was recently in DC for a book signing at a restaurant/bookstore called Busboys and Poets, I'm a little bummed I didn't hear about it until it was too late to attend. Oh well. I'll still read the book and maybe get a copy signed another time.

Green is the New Black: How to Change the World With Style by Tasmin Blanchard. One of my eco-conscious friends gave me this book and since I don't know very much about sustainable fashion practices, I'll definitely read it this fall.

The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy. I first read about this book over at Mane and Chic, and it sounded like an interesting read. Though I've never had chemicals in my hair, I feel that I still have a lot to learn about natural hair care and the science behind it, so I'll start by reading this book.

DC Shopping: It's Vintage Darling

There is a great vintage shop in the Columbia Heights neighborhood called, It's Vintage Darling. The store is indeed as darling as its title implies. It's Vintage Darling has a wide array of clothing, shoes, and accessories at an affordable price point. During my first visit, I saw lovely gems from classic brands like Ferragamo, Fendi, Louis Vuitton and Gucci. It's Vintage Darling also had a nice menswear section with funky ties, classic clothing, hats and shoes. Now that I've found this store, I'm a little afraid for my wallet...

If you are in the Columbia Heights area of Washington, DC, you should definitely check It's Vintage Darling out!

Style Profile: Classic Noise

For this edition of Shen's Style Profiles, Sorren of Classic Noise was nice enough to answer some questions about her style. Sorren does an excellent job of remixing her work wardrobe in stylish ways and also shares delicious recipes with readers. So now to the questions!

Shen Dove: What inspired you to start your blog and how did you come up with the title?

Sorren: As is the case with most other bloggers, the blogs I was reading inspired me to take the leap. It began a year prior when I discovered ahautemess. I loved Nikki's style, tongue-in-cheek witty writing and how obvious it was that she kept it real. Funnily enough, I didn't expand my reading to other blogs until October 2010, when my friend introduced me to Kendi Everyday and her upcoming 30 for 30 Challenge. The idea of a blog can be very overwhelming, so the challenge seemed like the perfect task that would help kick start my blog and give it an initial purpose and direction. For me, the title was the toughest part - it was also what caused me to join the challenge a week late! When it comes to commitment, I can be quite fickle. Details like titles, names, and colours always stop me in my tracks paralyzing me with the fear that I will grow to dislike what I eventually decide on the minute I've made my choice. When considering what others were doing, I enjoyed the titles that included the blogger's name in an interesting way but could not settle on the perfect adjective to pair with "Sorren." To be honest, I think it was because I was also a little put off by the idea of being so front and centre. Long story short, I decided to scrap something along the lines of "Simply Sorren" (I mean honestly, what's a Sorren anyway?) and focused on words I thought were indicative of myself and what I was trying to do with the blog. "Classic" was thrown in the running because my sense of style usually falls on the classic, as opposed to, trendy side. Since I couldn't decide whether I'd be focusing on fashion, personal style, food or design, I wanted a word that would allow me to change direction as I wanted. I felt that "noise" was representative of many things happening simultaneously and it could therefore encompass any route I decided to take.

Shen Dove: How would you describe your personal style? Have you seen your style evolve since you started your blog?

Sorren: In three words, I would describe my personal style as simple, classic and clean. Sometimes I like to get a little edgy, but my edgy is usually someone else's mid-week go-to (heels and shorts). I have definitely seen my style evolve since blogging. Initially this evolution was most apparent in my office wardrobe. The office where I used to work was located in an Industrial Park and was therefore fairly laid back and informal. I had begun to adopt a somewhat casual approach to my office wear and had begun to become bored with my closet. Once I began my blog I had an excuse to dress up again. It was fantastic. I realized how much I had missed styling chic, fun office-wear and began to have fun with my clothes again.Beyond the office, I have noticed that I am braver with what I wear, and also have more confidence in my choices. I definitely keep an eye out for statement pieces, jewellery and patterned pieces more so than before and am willing to take bigger risks on my purchases. However, I have yet to buy something in hopes of merely making a statement outfit just for my blog. If I'm going to spend money on it, it's got to be something I know I can wear on repeat.

Shen Dove: What do you enjoy most about blogging about style and fashion?

Sorren: The inspiration I gain through reading others' blogs AND, in turn, the inspiration I am able to offer, to my readers, through my own blogs. The absolute best compliments I've had are when I hear about people who have been motivated to get excited about, and re-discover, their own closets!

Shen Dove: You are graphic designer and I really enjoy your posts on your design projects! Is your fashion aesthetic similar to your graphic design style?

Sorren: Hurray! I'm so glad you enjoy those! The design aspect is definitely a part of my blog that I would like to expand on. I have been attempting to post design-related pieces more frequently but am not in the full swing yet.I definitely feel that my fashion aesthetic and graphic design tendencies are very similar. Im both cases I tend to gravitate towards a more simplistic and minimalistic approach. I admire colour, and sometimes use great big bursts of it, but for the most part I stick to neutrals with small colour accents (usually one colour at a time). I have an impulse to keep the overall look & feel clean, making most of white space - in terms of outfits this would mean not over-accessorizing - and keep any intricate design I do indulge in, contained to one area - i.e. a bunch of bracelets on one wrist rather than bracelets, belt earring, scarf, etc, all at once.

Shen Dove: How has the city/town you live in influenced your style?

Sorren: When I first moved to Halifax, about five years ago, the city's style was very understated and laid back. Although it was a very youthful city with an influx of students from across Canada and beyond (we have three universities and a number of community colleges), it was still just a lot of jeans and tanks at the bars. Since then, Halifax's style has definitely evolved, embracing trends that other cities are seeing and now seems to travel the spectrum from hipsters to bro-dudes. Since I am mostly drawn to classic, stand-the-test-of-time pieces I tend to have a limit as to how much external forces will influence my style choices, i.e. I won't be morphing into the lead ukulele player in a wu-tang coverband. The biggest influence Halifax has had on my style is the lingering appreciation I hold for younger, flirtier, fun pieces which, as long I manage their inclusion in my work-wardrobe, isn't a bad thing.

Shen Dove: What are some of your interests/hobbies outside of fashion blogging? Do you have any hidden talents?

Sorren: Interests and hobbies would include:Graphic Design. I like to design when I can, and when I'm asked. Lately I've worked on wedding invitations, a friend's business card and my own portfolio site. Web Design. I am also trying to get back into html and CSS. Playing producer and assistant to Jack's projects. I like helping anyway possible, from Music Video to screen printing.Reading. Anything from Bossypants to Survivor to Onward Watching movies and TV. Seriously, you would not believe how little TV I used to watch seven years ago (before my boyfriend). Luckily, TV time also means blog time.Hidden Talents:- I am a parallel parking pro. No lie. - Birthday-party planorama- Baking junkie.

Shen Dove: How do you plan to transition your favourite summer items into your fall wardrobe?

Sorren: Tights. Lots of tights. Patterned, coloured, and monochrome tights. In fact, I think I need to go tight shopping… Also, I am going to focus on re-discovering my cardigans, jackets and boots. Styling a piece from season to season offers such a random, fantastic feeling of accomplishment that I just cannot get enough. Obviously there are certain pieces that need to be retired until the return of the warmer weather, however in the upcoming months I will be attempting to convert the majority of my dresses into fall-friendly outfits, so keep an eye out for those!

Shen Dove: Do you have any personal style rules you live by? If so what are they?

Sorren: I don't have many, but I think these about cover it.Confidence is key. If you aren't confident in what you're wearing, don't wear it. There are go-to items in my closet that I will suddenly, for no discernible reason lose confidence in. When this happens, I just put them aside and wait for the weirdness to subside.Don't be a slave to sizing, it's all baloney. If it fits, it fits and that's all that's important - if it bothers you that much, cut out the tag. Store to store, label to label, dress to dress, I have run anywhere from a size 4 to 8 (small to medium), in tops and a 6 to 10 (medium to large), in bottoms. As long as it fits and I feel comfortable wearing it, I do not drive myself nutty worrying whether I should be a smaller size because sizes are subjective to the designer. Don't blow your money on trends, blow your money on what you like and what you will continue to like. Usually I'm late to a trend anyway making this a non-issue for me, but on the rare occasion I am ahead of the times, I hit up places like H&M to look for a trendy addition to my closet. I keep my big buys for those pieces I'll be able to wear for years, like my Halogen Jacket (2008), Boyfriend Blazer (2009), Club Monaco Skirt (2008), and BB Dakota Crop Jacket (2007).

Everybody, Everywear: Colored Pants

For the first time in several seasons, I'm actually looking forward to wearing pants this fall mainly because I've seen them in such great colors in stores, magazines and on fellow bloggers. I now think that a pop of color in your pants or jeans really adds so much to an outfit. I'm still a skirt collector, but I don't mind wearing pants from time to time also.

After typing out my outfit components above, I realize that most of this outfit came from H&M. But that's okay! You like what you like right?

Happy Monday, friends! Hope you all had lovely weekends! There's nothing like the end of a season to make you want to wear all of your favorite pieces while you can. These shoes are obviously a summer favorite and I' wearing them as much as possible for the remaining few weeks we have left of summer! I was inspired to wear this sleeveless dress (another favorite) as a vest after seeing this blogger's outfit. I find myself inspired by the style of bloggers even more so than fashion magazines these days.

I'm starting to get a excited about fall, but the only thing I'll really miss about the summer is having more hours of sunlight in the evenings. I've already noticed that the days are a bit shorter than last month...I'll have to adjust the times that I take my photos accordingly.

I'm not against wearing white after Labor Day, but there's nothing like wearing white (and seersucker) on a summer day.

For this edition of Shen Style Profiles, Cheryl of the great blog, Oh to Be a Muse was kind enough to answer a few questions about her blog and her personal style. Cheryl is great at mixing affordable pieces together to make stylish outfits. Cheryl discusses many issues related to fashion and its intersection with popular culture on her blog. She also happens to write great movie reviews that I personally use to decide what's worth seeing in movie theatres! So now to the questions!

Shen Dove: What inspired you to start your blog and how did you come up with the title?

Cheryl: I was mainly inspired to start blogging because I've always been a writer and because I was getting married and wanted to showcase my wedding prep journey. Eventually I ventured on a different path and started to focus on all clothing and shoes and accessories on my blog. The name Oh to Be a Muse comes from my mission statement for my style to inspire my readers and for my readers to inspire their own style.

Shen Dove: How would you describe your personal style? Is it influenced by your career/job?

Cheryl: Wowza! I always find it difficult to answer questions about my personal style, which probably sounds silly coming from a fashion and style blogger. Really, I just dress in what makes me feel comfortable. So some days I'll wear something on the edgy side while other times I'll glam it up. My style is influenced by comfort and by my 'career' as a fashion blogger as I love the creative wardrobes of other bloggers' style.

Shen Dove: How has the city/town you live in influenced your style?

Cheryl: Well I used to live in south Florida, which has a very beachy style, and now I live in Phoenix, which has a very laid back style. I can't say that either place really left a mark on me style-wise. But I went to London last year and was simply walking down the streets and was bombarded by girls (and guys) with mega style left and right. They didn't look like they were trying to be stylish--they just were.

Shen Dove: What do you enjoy most about blogging about style and fashion?

Cheryl: Everything. I love coming up with ideas for posts. I love making style boards and shooting outfit posts. I love receiving and giving comments. I love the connections I've made with sponsors. I love how much I've learned about social media and photography. I love the blogging community. There are so many people in the blogosphere whom I'd love to meet IRL.

Shen Dove: What are some of your interests/hobbies outside of fashion blogging? Do you have any hidden talents?

Cheryl: When I'm not blogging I'm probably spending time with my hubby and our two dogs--a Pomeranian and a German Shepherd mix. I like to hike, read books, watch tons and tons of movies, thrift shop and drink Thai iced tea. My hidden talent would be that I sing, and I think I'm pretty good at it.

Shen Dove: I know it seems like summer just started, but fall will be here before you know it! How do you plan to transition your favorite summer items into your fall wardrobe?

Cheryl: You're so right; fall will be here shortly. My plan is to layer. Wear summer dresses with tights, leggings, trenches and snoods and scarves. I've been adding more color to my wardrobe recently and a lot of those colors are perfect for fall so hopefully that will do the trick.

Shen Dove: Do you have any personal style rules you live by? If so what are they?

Cheryl: My only style rule is that everyone wears what they feel truly comfortable in: know what you look good in and wear what you love. Forget about forgettable pieces and have your own individual style because that alone is fashionable.

Washington, DC has a thriving fashion community and offers a wide array of boutiques and stores that I want to start highlighting on Shen Dove Style for local and visiting fashion enthusiasts. Carbon is a boutique located in the Woodley Park section of the city that offers upscale, high-quality, eco-friendly clothing, shoes, accessories and handbags. I became familiar with the store after attending a fashion show earlier this year and a DC FABB event last month. Store owner, Katherine Limon was kind enough to answer some questions about Carbon recently. So let's get to the questions!

Shen Dove: When did you open Carbon?

Katherine (Carbon): CARBON opened in Woodley Park five years ago but I took over as the new owner in March 2011. My concept for the store is eco-friendly, sustainable chic living through ethically-made apparel, accessories, and shoes. I carry local designers and have dedicated the wall space to local artists to showcase and sell their work.

Shen Dove: Tell me about your background, what inspired you to open this store?

Katherine (Carbon): I am a journalist by trade and have worked in the realm of communications for small non-profits focused on worker rights and child labor, and the federal government on youth development. In 2006, I started My Signature Look to help men and women look their best in fit and style. It also served the purpose of educating consumers on the source of their garments and introducing ethically-produced apparel and footwear. Now that I have the store, as of March 2011, I can bring what I consider slow fashion products to the consumer on a wider scale.

Shen Dove: What do you like the most about being located in Woodley Park?

Katherine (Carbon): Since the store was already here, the previous owner built a trust and strong relationship with the neighbors so I was fortunate to inherit that audience. Honestly, I wish there were more retailers on the block for people to consider this as a dining and shopping destination.

Shen Dove: What do you think makes style in Washington, DC unique?

Katherine (Carbon): Your style should be an extension of your personality. It should give people clues about who you are and your worldview, wherever you live. When I first moved here 8 years ago, I must admit, I was surprised to observe a style that screamed conformity and lackluster. Given what our nation’s capital represents, it would be nice to see a greater effort made to present the full package meaning your appearance should reflect your voice – polished, smart, and interesting. I love that we live in a rich, diverse community and I encourage everyone to embrace those characteristics in their wardrobe.

Shen Dove: I think it’s great that you have built relationships with local designers and have events that feature them. What do you look for when you’re on the hunt for new artists and designers to feature in your store?

Katherine (Carbon): I take pride in featuring our local talent and want to showcase their best work. I look for creativity, functionality, excellent construction (whether that is apparel, accessories, or shoes), and the designer’s point of view. I strive to find designers who incorporate a hand-made quality or keep production in the USA or in factories that allow them to do small volume. I try to avoid offering you something you can find in a department store – I want it as unique to DC as possible. For the artists, the subject matter doesn’t necessarily have to be local; rather they evoke that same spirit for creativity and uniqueness.

Shen Dove: What do you think is the biggest misconception about eco-friendly and ethically sourced items?

Katherine (Carbon): It is exciting to see an increased awareness and demand for eco-friendly apparel and footwear; however, the appeal is not across the board. What the general public may not consider are the costs factored into an ethically-made item. Fabrics such as 100% organic cotton, will remain expensive for U.S. designers until U.S. farmers receive incentives for growing pesticide-free cotton. (China is the largest manufacturer of organic cotton.) It is amazing what you can turn into fabric – wood pulp, milk, and soy! There is the labor cost as well. Slow fashion requires skilled artisans paid a livable wage. Yes, there is an investment but you are investing in yourself, your environment, and the artisan community. Plus, on a pure cost per wear analysis, you are going to get more out of a sustainable product. The term “ethically sourced,” to me, indicates in-house or factories that adhere to a code of conduct, employ environmentally-sound practices, and protect workers rights.

Shen Dove: What trends are you excited about featuring in your store this fall?

Katherine (Carbon): From A.D.O. (Angelika Dreams About Organic), expect beautiful suiting separates, again in 100% organic cotton and some in Tencel. Local designer Kim Schalk will offer her signature figure-flattering skirts. We are also excited about a couple of new men’s and women’s shoe lines such as vegan Neuaura, J Shoes, and Oliberte (CARBON will be the first to carry J Shoes and Oliberte in DC – yay!!). Just in time for the holidays, we will be bringing in Emu, a sustainable shoe and clothing line from Australia.

Shen Dove: Do you have any fun events you’d like locals or those visiting DC this fall to attend at your store?

Katherine (Carbon): For August, upcoming events include a wine and art night on Friday, Aug. 19 from 6 – 8 p.m. where all the photography is up to 50% off. We are teaming up with International Visions Gallery for a Fashion Meets Art Catwalk on Friday, Aug. 26 from 6 – 9 p.m.

September 9, 2011 a special art reception featuring an installation by two US AID workers to coincide with the arrival of the Oliberte shoe line.

September 23, 2011, an eco-fashion show featuring the new A.D.O. collection and Neuaura shoes.

This dress was a recent find from the Buffalo Exchange. The day I bought this dress, there were several cute dresses in my size, which was lucky! The floor must have just been replenished with stock before I arrived. I saw the exact same dress in my size in a dark green, but opted for this peach color instead. I also saw this dress in my size and still have a bit of nonbuyer's remorse for not purchasing it. Oh well, it happens.

My dress is ankle length without tucking it into a belt. I thought about hemming it, but I think I'll leave it as it so I'll have the option of wearing it both ways. As a short, petite gal, my first instinct is to always hem an item, but sometimes, it's okay to have a bit more length in dresses or skirts.

Summer Hair Products

I don't talk much about hair on my blog (I leave that to the experts!). But like most people, I definitely use hair products and have items that I reach for on a consistent basis. Before the summer ends, I wanted to post the hair products I've been using this season.

I have chemical free type 4a hair that is very coily. I rarely wear my hair out unless it is blow dried or straightened with a flat iron. I think updos work well for all settings (work and casual), so that's what I've stuck to lately. I have not applied any heat to my hair this summer. I have also self trimmed my hair this summer.

When the temperatures are cooler this fall, I plan to straighten my hair at least once and get a professional style and trim. When I use up all of my current shampoos, I will consider trying one of Shea Moisture's shampoos or Oyin Handmade's Shampoo bar because I like and use other products from both companies. I also plan to resume henna treatments (which basically serve the same purpose as protein treatments). Applying henna to hair also serves as natural hair color, but I have not experienced drastic change to my hair color with henna. I just saw a slight reddish tint in direct sunlight. I was consistently doing henna treatments every six weeks during the winter, but because the process is time consuming, I haven't done any in the last few months. I have used Aphogee Two Minute Recontructor as my stand-in "protein treatment."

My current regime pretty much consists of:

Detangle hair with conditioner and water or leave-in conditioner spray.
Shampoo hair focusing on scalp.
Spritz with Apple Cider Vinegar to restore PH balance if a clarifying shampoo is used.
Deep condition for a minimum of 30 minutes (with heat typically).
Twist or braid hair using styling aid or coconut oil
Let hair air dry overnight in twists or braids.
Either pin up twists/braids or untwist/braid hair and pin into an updo.
Lightly spray hair with leave-in conditioner daily.
Retwist hair with leave-in conditioner at night if needed.
Untwist and restyle using coconut oil in the morning.

While we're on the topic of hair, I've been perusing the Internet for hair inspiration to add to my pinterest hair style board because I think I'm due for a change.

I rediscovered this dress purchased a few years ago during my stint as a part time sales associate at the Loft (back when it was called Ann Taylor Loft). This dress has survived my last few visits to the Buffalo Exchange to sell clothes (when I happen to be in a city that has one).

It should be no surprise that I love dresses because they are a one-step outfit. As much as I adore skirts, finding coordinating tops requires more thought (at least for me) than a simple dress like this one.

Hello friends! This week really flew by so fast! I'm hoping the weekend goes by slower than the week has. I don't really consider green to be "my color" and I gravitate more to red (and occasionally yellow) these days, but it was nice to switch up my usual choices with this olive green dress.

I was feeling sunshiny today despite the clouds and sporadic rain. Sometimes it's necessary to bring your own sunshine along with you when nature doesn't provide it.

This skirt is officially "safe" for the season. I have a rule I'm pretty at good sticking to, that if I haven't worn a piece of clothing (except a few sentimental pieces) during the season, that I have to give it away. It helps me to keep my closet in check and make sure I'm actually wearing the clothing I buy. Do you have any "wardrobe rules" you try to stick to?

Despite the excessive heat, I really have enjoyed the summer and am in no rush to see it end. I love the sunshine of summer which lends itself to spending time outdoors (unless it's 100+ degrees like it has been...). But August is always the reality check that the summer is technically winding down.

So let's all set some fun goals (schedule a day trip, squeeze in a few outdoor movie screenings, go to a late summer festival, visit a nearby beach) and some goals centered around productivity (finish a task you've procrastinated on this summer).

Happy Friday friends! It's feels a bit funny to be back to regular outfit of the day photos. I still am tempted to reach for the same items I've been wearing for the 30 for 30 because they really are favorites. I did relax my no-shopping ban recently and got this dress from Francesca's. I think this dress has a lot of remix potential for the fall which I guess makes sense since summer is quickly winding down.

I wore a slight variation of this outfit earlier this week when I attended a DCFABB event at Carbon DC. I took very few photos, but Elizabeth of So Much to Smile About did a great recap of the event. It was nice to meet some stylish ladies in the local area in person!

I’m feeling wordy today, so here are a few random Shen thoughts:

As an avid book reader, I’m mourning the loss of Border’s but I’ve contributed to its demise like everyone else. I've limited my book purchases and opted for my local library and Paperback Swap instead. When I do buy books, I typically get them used from Amazon. Will museums have photos of bookstores (and music stores) to remind future generations of things from past eras?
On a related note, I’m still holding out on buying a book reader though it would get a lot of use because I think it would lead to more book purchases. More book purchases would take away from my clothing budget…nice to see that I have my priorities in order.
Wonder if anyone else is excited about the come-back of 90’s Nikelodeon kids programming on TeenNick on Mondays from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. As most children of the 80s and 90s, I have fond memories of watching shows like Clarissa Explains It All, Doug and All That. The time period that the shows are running is not ideal for most working adults, but it will be nice to revisit them during my occasional night owl moments.

I'm wondering if I should invest more of the considerable amount of time I spend on social media networks using Google +. Anyone else planning to be a frequent user? Having blog friends to connect with on there might make it worth while…
One of my favorite summer beverages is Iced Coffee which I was reminded of after reading this article. I prefer my tea hot and my coffee cold in the summer, I don’t know why.
I’ve purposely been avoiding looking at fall trends and lookbooks, but guess it’s time to start thinking about what I’d like to add to my wish lists for the fall.
I hope to see this documentary at some point over the weekend. I love this group and often play their music on my headphones during the work day.

For this edition of Shen Style Profiles, Lydia of the lovely blog, Chic on the Cheap was kind enough to answer some questions. LyddieGal has a great eye for creating stylish, affordable looks. She is also a great photographer and her self-taken photos always look fantastic. So let's get down to the questions!

Shen Dove: What inspired you to start your blog and how did you come up with the title?

Lydia: I was just looking for a creative outlet to write and keep a bit of a journal. I never expected people to actually read it -- and now I wish I'd put a little more thought into the name, and come up with something more unique. But I'm the top google hit now, so there is no changing it!

Shen Dove: How would you describe your personal style? Is it influenced by your career/job?

Lydia: My style is a mix of classic and quirky, I like bold colors and I try to find classic and flattering cuts. My job is at a pretty causal office, so I can get away with a lot of things more conservative offices might not allow. I like that I can dress as creatively as I please at work!

Shen Dove: How has the city/town you live in influenced your style?

Lydia: I live in a pretty small town, it's not hard to be the best dressed person in a room at any given time. It might be nice to live in a fashion mecca, and see everyone else walking the streets looking their best. Last time I visited NYC I saw a girl wearing the most amazing turquoise boots and this perfect camel trench, and I recall thinking her outfit made mine look like I was just slumming it.

Shen Dove: It seems like summer just started, but fall will be here before you know it! How do you plan to transition your favorite summer items into the fall?

Lydia: Do I have to think about fall already?! Summer is by far my favorite season and it always goes way too quick. I will definitely be wearing some of my shorts with boots and blazers for as many weekends as the fickle fall weather will allow, and I just got a pair of red jeans, that will transition perfectly with some cozy knits and knee high boots.

Shen Dove: Looking your best doesn't necessarily mean spending your entire paycheck; how do you manage to remain so stylish yet also be conscious of spending? Do you have any tips to share?

Lydia: Usually when I walk into a store, I got straight to the sale rack. Most times I won't even bother tormenting myself with the full priced merchandise. It will all go on sale eventually! When it comes to shoes, shop around, and shop online. Many places carry the same shoes and you never know who is going to have the best price. Amazon is great and usually unbeatable, but Piperlime's sales are really awesome + they have free shipping and returns! Modcloth changes the names of their shoes to whatever cute thing they can think of, but if you can see the brand in the photo, you can google it, and chances are you can find it for much less elsewhere.

Shen Dove: You are so great at making and altering your own clothing! Do you have any tips for ladies that would like to do the same?

Lydia: You need a lot of patience, and a willingness to let yourself make mistakes. You need a full length mirror and a pile of straight pins. Also a seam ripper. When it comes to alterations, you've just got to put it on and start pining. It's got to be on you if it is going to fit you, so that is where the mirror comes in. If it is something you picked up at the thrift store, just remind yourself you only paid a couple dollars for it and if you ruin it, at least you've gained experience. Alterations seem really intimidating at first, but take the time to study how the garment was constructed, and you can easily see where the changes need to be made.

Shen Dove: What do you enjoy most about blogging about style and fashion?

Lydia: I love that it has motivated me to take photos everyday, and to help me improve my camera skills so much! Photography is something I've loved for a while, and it was always a bit of a pipe dream to be a fashion photographer. So now, in my own way, I am.

Shen Dove: Do you have any personal style rules you live by? If so, what are they?

Lydia: I used to have a whole bunch of rules about how I couldn't wear horizontal stripes, or I couldn't wear yellow, or I couldn't wear heels over two inches. But I've abandoned them all. My only rule now is to wear clothes that make me feel gorgeous.

Maybe it's a good thing that I have been gravitating to clutches lately. I practically had to empty out my whole purse yesterday (my work purse, not the clutch pictured) to find my keys...smh. I obviously carry around too much stuff.

I'm not sure what I was thinking including jeans in my 30 for 30 items during a
hot and muggy DC summer, but I'm determined to wear them at least this one time (I spend most days in chilly air conditioned buildings anyway).

Book Review: Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All

I’ve always loved books (and bring up what I'm reading pretty regularly). I also truly enjoy discussing what I'm reading. So it's only fair that I share my views about some of the books I've read here. I recently finished reading Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All by Russell Simmons. The book title may be a bit misleading because it’s not a prescriptive book on how to get rich quick. Super Rich is really based on the premise that finding peace and happiness in what you're doing being the path to prosperity.

Reading Super Rich was kind of like watching an episode of Oprah’s Masterclass show on the OWN network, with Simmons outlining his personal evolution and his views on success and fulfillment. In the book, Simmons talks about his evolution from a kid from Hollis, Queens that developed his passion for Hip-Hop into a career as Def Jam Records founder/Hip-Hop culture icon, businessman, social media influencer, clothing designer, meditation/yoga enthusiast and philanthropist.

One of my favorite parts of the book was a description of when a recent college graduate approached Simmons and tells him that he wants to be an actor in Hollywood. Simmons tells the young man to stop being a baby (he actually uses stronger language than this but you get the point) and to take the next bus to L.A., get any job that he can and work/hustle as hard as he can until he reaches his goal. The next time Simmons sees the young man, he has “hustled” his way into an exclusive party. By this time, the young man has networked with people in the entertainment industry and started receiving acting opportunities. How inspiring is that! The idea that hard work and a "hustle mentality" can get you places in life isn't new, but I found it interesting to hear the Russell Simmons perspective on success.

In Super Rich, Simmons explains that while monetary wealth can bring a lot about fun toys and opportunities, true happiness does not come from the things you own. Simmons talks in detail about how yoga, mediation and veganism have influenced his life. I have very little knowledge on these subjects and found Simmon's descriptions of basic tenets of yoga and meditation interesting. Even if you aren't interested in yoga and meditation, I think this is a great book for any young person interested in harnessing their passion for success and personal fulfillment into reality. The main take-away from this book for me was encouragement to go after your dreams, wealth and abundance will follow.

So the truth is, I only donned this hat for outfit photos, because I feel a little odd wearing a hat on a weekday. Hats signify weekends for me because I don't wear them to work. I think hats definitely push the business casual dress code of my office.

I also thought adding an accessory would relieve the 30 for 30 fatigue I'm now experiencing as I approach the end of this round of the challenge. I'm ready to do a little late summer shopping and revisit some favorite items that haven't been worn in the past few weeks. Can anyone else participating in the challenge relate?

Natural Mood Enhancer

I love bright colors, but yellow is truly a favorite. Wearing yellow instantly brightens my mood and always adds visual interest when worn with neutral and bold colors alike.

According to color theory, yellow is associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. So the next time you want to channel any of those feelings, put on your favorite shade of yellow and greet the world with a smile. It works for me!

I rarely remember to wear headbands, but this one coordinated so well, I couldn't resist. I used to wear head scarves and wraps much more often, I need to remember to wear them more.

Happy Friday friends! Looking back at my outfits over the past few weeks, I realize how much red I've been wearing lately. When I'm ready to add things to my wardrobe, I'll keep in mind that I have several red pieces and stick to other colors.
